The Game Plan

  1. Fill a large pot with water and bring to a rolling boil. Drop in the hot dogs and cook for 5-7 minutes until heated through and slightly plumped. You'll know they're ready when they start to swell and the skin gets taut.

  2. While the dogs cook, dice your onion and set out your toppings in little bowls like you're running your own food court. Because you are. Drain your sauerkraut well — nobody wants a soggy bun.

  3. Pull the dogs from the water and nestle each one into a steamed bun. Let any excess water drip off first — give it a little shake.

  4. Top with your preferred combination of mustard, relish, sauerkraut, and diced onion. The classic Costco move is mustard and onion, but nobody's checking your receipt.

  5. Serve immediately. No plates required — just napkins and ambition.

  6. If you want to go full food court, serve with a soda. The drink is included, after all. (Well, it was.)

The Day 2 Evolution

Chop into mac and cheese for an easy weeknight dinner the kids will actually eat

Wrap in crescent roll dough for pigs in blankets — great party snack

Slice into coins and add to baked beans for a campfire-style side dish

Dip in cornmeal batter and fry for homemade corn dogs (way better than frozen)

Dice and scramble with eggs, peppers, and onions for a diner-style breakfast hash

Slice lengthwise, stuff with cheese, wrap in bacon, and bake at 400°F for a truly unhinged appetizer

Simmer sliced dogs in barbecue sauce in a slow cooker for a party dip situation

Chop and toss into fried rice with soy sauce, frozen peas, and a scrambled egg
