Party Planning with Costco

The secret to hosting is buying in bulk and pretending it was effortless.

Nobody needs to know that your "homemade" spread was 60% Costco deli platters and a slow cooker doing all the work. That's a win.

The Formula

  • 1/3 Costco prepared items — Deli platters, rotisserie chickens, bakery cakes. Your anchors.
  • 1/3 homemade dishes — The stuff that makes people say "you made this?" Prep ahead.
  • 1/3 store-bought snacks & drinks — Chips, salsa, drinks, paper goods. Nobody needs artisanal napkins.

By Group Size

10 People (~$50–75)

The intimate gathering. One main, one side, one appetizer, drinks, and paper goods.

Category Suggestion Source
Main Pulled pork or taco bar Slow Cooker Pulled Pork or Street Taco Bar
Side Mac and cheese Mac and Cheese
Appetizer Buffalo chicken dip Buffalo Chicken Dip
Drinks Two 24-packs of drinks + one juice/lemonade Costco beverage aisle
Paper goods Kirkland plates, cups, napkins One trip, one aisle, done

25 People (~$100–150)

The "real party" size. You need two mains, two sides, two appetizers, and a dessert.

Suggested combo:

50 People (~$175–250)

The big one. Go wide on variety so there's something for everyone.

At this scale, Costco prepared platters are your best friend. Let the deli do the heavy lifting.

Costco Prepared Platters

When in doubt, let the deli do the heavy lifting. Order 24–48 hours ahead at the counter or via the Costco app.

  • Sandwich Platter — Croissant sandwiches. Feeds 16–20.
  • Shrimp Cocktail Platter — Looks fancy. Zero effort.
  • Veggie Platter — For the "just something light" crowd (who then eat all of it).
  • Cookie Tray — Dessert, handled.

Timeline

Don't try to do everything day-of. Spread the work across the week and you'll actually enjoy your own party.

When What to Do
1 week before Order deli platters. Confirm headcount. Make a shopping list.
2 days before Costco trip. Buy everything on your list. (And maybe a few "extras" — it's Costco, it happens.)
1 day before Prep casseroles and dips. Marinate meats. Set up any serving stations.
Morning of Bake casseroles. Start slow cooker recipes. Cut fruit and veggies.
1 hour before Set out platters, dips, snacks, and drinks. Put on music. Take a breath.
Party time Enjoy it. You did the work already.
